Lime Supply was given the opportunity to tour Disley Mill, the centre for Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd‘s recycling arm. They are one of a small handful of companies in the UK market that is fully vertically integrated; involved at each point in the supply chain from raw material supply, tissue and towel manufacturing, end-user product converting, storage, and transportation.
Sitting on a 48-acre waterside site, the mill supplies reliable materials to allow the manufacturing of paper reels for conversion and recycles over 100,000 tonnes of recovered fibre annually. It was interesting to see a sustainable approach to production in person.
The site was purchased from Kruger Tissues in 2009 and is one of only three privately owned manufacturing companies in the UK. Disley manufactures high-quality recycled tissue products, from tissue paper to cardboard, and many grades in between, which they sell to the UK and European market. They make the highest quality paper with a low carbon and water footprint from sustainable raw materials, whilst minimising impact on the local environment and communities. They are also capable of producing thousands of tonnes of recycled tissue paper and de-inked pulp made from waste paper per year.
During the tour Lime Supply scoped the raw material storage area. Here, massive rolls of paper were neatly stacked, waiting to be transformed into high-quality hygiene products. It was fascinating to see the sheer volume of materials that go into producing these everyday essentials.
We also explored the production floor. This was a bustling workspace with all machines in action. From the cutting and shaping processes to the packaging and quality control, every step was meticulously carried out with precision and care.
Emphasis on safety was paramount throughout the mill and we were all equipped with protective gear, and there were clear signs and barriers to ensure a safe working environment. The level of automation in the production process was also interesting to witness, with all machines programmed to perform tasks with incredible speed and accuracy. Overall it was evident that Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd has invested heavily in technology to streamline its operations and deliver products of the highest quality.
