Does the FM sector need a sustainable supply chain?
Empowering our customers to make sustainable purchasing decisions through transparent supply chain data.
MENU
When Lime Sustainable Supplies was born back in 2010, sustainability was an afterthought for most people. As a company, we helped introduce several sustainable product lines and although we did have early adopters, on the whole, the importance of the message fell on deaf ears.
Times have changed, especially in the world of FM. The client, whether that is the end company direct, or one of the many ever-growing property management companies, has expectations that your ESG house is in order. In fact, some tenders now allocate up to 40% of the scoring down to ESG, and this will only continue to increase over the coming years.
Speaking to leaders in our industry about how they retain and pitch for new business, the resounding feedback is that the client is taking it as read that you will have great service, support and the quality of your work will be excellent. They are looking for how you differentiate yourself, whether that’s through technology or company vision and, as equally notable, how light your tread is on the environment around you, and what data you boast to prove this.
At Lime Sustainable Supplies we have never been a trend-following company and have always enjoyed leading from the front. That is why we decided the FM sector needed a fully transparent sustainable supply chain built on an industry-leading platform that would help our customers retain & win business and set them firmly aside from the competition.
Our innovative, award-winning online sustainable supply chain allows customers to make purchasing decisions based on transparent eco information and full supply chain auditing, to remove any chance of greenwashing. We categorise products in 3 simple eco levels measured by leaf icons with clearly presented eco criteria with up to 15 measurements including percentage of renewable power in manufacturing, country of origin, single-use plastic content & level of aquatic toxicity.
We back this up by carrying out independent life cycle assessments and carbon footprints on our products. It is incredibly important that the independent 3rd party body was neutral and not linked to manufacturers to give full peace of mind that the footprints provided were free of all bias.
We use the carbon footprint of each product to compare to an industry-standard product so we can show Scope 4 carbon reduction savings. For full transparency our system allows all data to be seen on the product page for easy analysis, and up to 3 products can be compared side by side so the carbon savings can be cross-referenced to easily pull out the product with the lightest footprint.
We designed a sustainable customer retention programme in which we plant trees and offset carbon linked to sustainable purchasing to help improve purchasing behaviour. No investment is made if customers buy non-sustainable products but as they move to a 1-leaf product, we offset carbon and plant trees, we then double that if they move to a 2-leaf product and double it again when they move to a 3-leaf product. This encourages better purchasing behaviour and offsets and reduces their carbon footprint.
All our key sustainable metrics and rewards are included in a free monthly visual ESG report that can be run in full by the business, region or individual client site, allowing customers to measure, analyse and reduce their environmental impact. The visual reporting makes it easy to send to clients every month and engage with them on the product range you are using and how that is having a direct impact on reducing their carbon footprint.
With over 2 years in planning and building, our system is designed to deliver the essential environmental information FM companies and their customers need. We can service our customer base with the full metrics covering the below key areas and we display this in three simple categories, last month, YTD and Lifetime figures:
Breakdown of products bought in the three transparent sustainable leaf categories.
Scope 4 carbon savings by CO2 KGs based on actual product purchasing activity.
Full breakdown of origin of manufacture of all product purchases by UK, Europe and Rest of World.
Single-use plastic savings by KGs on products.
Trees planted on customer behalf when they buy sustainably.
Carbon offset on customer behalf measured in metric tonnes when they buy sustainably.
Last 4 carbon offset projects invested in on customer behalf.
Percentage of living wage paid across the extended manufacturing supply chain.
We have already had a significant impact on behalf of our customers within the first year:
Planted over 6,000 trees through Ecologi linked to sustainable purchasing.
Achieved Scope 4 savings of over 140,000 kgs of CO2 by sustainable purchasing.
Offsetting over 300 metric tonnes of CO2 through VCS & Gold Standard certified programmes.
So, does the FM industry need a fully transparent sustainable supply chain? It does if they want to combat greenwashing by comparing all products on a level playing field and combining that information with full life cycle assessments and carbon footprints. It does if they want to be empowered to make more informed decisions and create Scope 4 savings and reduce their carbon footprint, and it does if they want to separate themselves out from the competition and retain and win new business on their sustainable credentials.
