Explore the success of Lime Supply’s innovative tree planting scheme and our collaboration with Ecologi.
Lime Supply’s tree planting scheme was born from the rebirth of Lime Supply’s image and a deep commitment to environmental sustainability, recognising the urgent need to combat deforestation and its devastating impact on the planet. We launched this initiative to contribute to reforestation efforts around the world, inspiring our customers to purchase more sustainably, whilst rewarding them at the same time.
The initiative was inspired by the alarming rate at which forests are being cleared for various purposes, including agriculture and urbanisation. We saw an opportunity to make a difference and decided to take action by helping to plant trees on a large scale.
The goal of our tree planting initiative is not only to offset the carbon emissions associated with our operations but also to support projects that involve the restoration of ecosystems, biodiversity, and provide socio-economic benefits to local communities.
Since the launch of Lime Supply’s tree planting scheme, the impact has been truly remarkable. As of today, we have successfully planted over three thousand trees across different countries, helping to restore vital ecosystems and combat climate change.
Through a rigorous monitoring and evaluation process, we ensure that the trees planted are thriving and making a meaningful impact, with all trees monitored by satellite and on the ground. Our partners at Ecologi regularly collaborate with local environmental organisations and experts to ensure the success of their tree planting projects.
The progress made by Lime Supply’s tree planting scheme is not limited to environmental impact alone. It has also created numerous job opportunities for local communities, empowering them economically and promoting sustainable development.
Lime’s partnership with Ecologi has been instrumental in amplifying the impact of our tree planting scheme. Ecologi is a renowned environmental organisation that specialises in carbon offsetting and reforestation projects.
Through this collaboration, Lime Supply and Ecologi have joined forces to plant trees and combat deforestation on a large scale. Also extending beyond tree planting with carbon offset projects that protect the climate.
By combining our expertise, we showcase the power of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and encourage other businesses to do the same.
Lime Supply has ambitious goals for the future of our tree planting scheme. Aiming to significantly increase the number of trees planted each year and expanding our reach to even more places around the world, with a goal to plant over 50,000 trees next year.
We also plan to explore innovative reforestation techniques to maximise the positive impact of our tree planting efforts. Lime is committed to continuously improving our practices and staying at the forefront of environmental sustainability.
As always, we aim to inspire and motivate other companies to implement similar tree planting initiatives. Lime believes collective action and transparency is essential in addressing climate change and restoring the balance of our ecosystems.
Lime Supply’s tree planting scheme goes beyond environmental impact; it also brings numerous benefits to local communities. By involving community members in the tree planting process, we create a sense of ownership and pride in environmental stewardship.
The tree planting projects generate employment opportunities, empowering local communities and contributing to their economic well-being. Additionally, the restored ecosystems provide habitat for wildlife, supporting biodiversity and preserving natural heritage.
Furthermore, Lime Supply’s tree planting scheme has a positive social impact by improving air quality, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing the overall beauty of the landscapes where the trees are planted. These benefits create a healthier and more sustainable environment for everyone.
Deforestation is a major source of carbon dioxide contributions to the atmosphere, so reforestation is seen as a reversal of that process. Rain patterns are changing, driving up temperatures and increasing the risk of fires, droughts, hurricanes and other events that can damage or kill large numbers of trees. The projects we support boost biodiversity that will help keep carbon locked away, and sequester more carbon from the atmosphere. The conservation and restoration of forests is a key solution because it helps to sink carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the trees’ biomass. Especially coastal tree species like mangroves, which provide excellent natural barriers that protect the shoreline from storms.
The location of the 11 projects we have supported so far are marked on the globe below, along with a breakdown of our most successful projects to date.
Lime Supply has funded 1,008 trees to this project.
Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 kilometres off the coast of East Africa. It is the world’s second largest island country, after Indonesia, and the island of Madagascar itself is the fourth largest island in the world. The country is considered a biodiversity hotspot, and over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on earth.
In recent years, vast areas of Madagascar’s original forests have been destroyed, displacing entire animal species and diminishing local people’s ability to farm and live on the land. Entire mangrove estuaries are also gone, leaving the bare earth to wash away into the sea. These mangrove forests are not only crucial carbon sinks, they also provide habitats for a wide range of marine species that live in the shallows, and provide vital coastal protection from floods and storms.
Ecologi’s mangrove restoration efforts in Madagascar support tree planting locations on parcels of coastal land to the North West of the island, near Mahajanga. Whilst the combined restoration area is wider, to date Ecologi have funded mangrove planting spanning an area of around 600 hectares of this degraded coastal region – and as each small pocket of land is planted, community funding is directed to support further planting, further along the coast.
Lime supply has funded 736 trees to this project.
The Kass FM project site is located in the Mau region of Southern Kenya. It covers six individually-defined reforestation areas totalling 5,700 hectares in area. The land itself is owned by the local community and will be planted by local community members from the region.
Using an “employ-to-plant” methodology provides a consistent income in sustainable land-use practices for the local people who are employed as planters, nursery staff, and forest guards as part of the project activity. This consistent income allows the local community to achieve greater levels of access to education, nutrition and healthcare.
Over the large area of the site and the 7-year project period, it is estimated that around 14.25 million afromontane trees will be planted across the Kass FM planting site, thanks to the support of Ecologi.
Forests are home to a wealth of wildlife. If we don’t protect what we have left and work to create woodlands of the future, we stand to lose more than just trees. Lime will continue to support tree planting projects across the globe throughout 2024 and beyond.
